Important Information
Attendance
When your child is absent from school, he/she needs to bring a note to the attendance clerk, Shari Pickardt. Any absence without a note is considered unexcused. All absence notes must be turned in no later than 24 hours after student absence. You may email the attendance clerk at spickardt@tarkington.isd.esc4.net.
The first bell rings at 7:53, and the tardy bell rings at 8:00. Please
refrain from dropping students off before 7:30, as there will not be available
staff on duty before this time.
When a student is picked up during school hours, the parent/ guardian must
present identification in order to sign the student out. Students will
not be released to anyone not already on the child’s information sheet.
We cannot take a child out of class until the parent comes in the office
and signs them out. (We regret we cannot accept phone requests to have
the student ready for pickup.)
The release bell rings at 3:30. Please take this time in consideration
when asking to change transportation home. If an early pick-up is necessary,
it is recommended that parents arrive before 3:00. Pickup location is the
Band Hall parking lot, located at the west side of the school.
Due to safety issues students not in athletics or an after school activity
need to be picked up by 4:00.
Bus Transfer Requests
A parent/ guardian note must be sent in order to ride a different bus
or to change stop locations.
On this note, please provide your name, the student’s name, and a phone
number for verification.
Due to overcrowding on school buses, students cannot ride home with friends
on the school bus unless they ride the same bus.
The same information is required to make this change by phone, and request
cannot be fulfilled after 2:15.
Students are encouraged to bring these notes to the office as early as
possible. It is very difficult to issue a bus transfer during dismissal. The
general rule is that no transfers will be issued after 2:15.

Hints to Help Your Child Be a Better Reader
- Take your child to the library.
- Listen to your child read aloud.
- Have a set time for daily reading. (30 minutes per day)
- Question when and where the story took place.
- Select words for your child to define.
- Let your children see you reading. (Newspapers and magazines count!)
- When traveling, have family members take turns reading aloud. (not the driver!)
- When watching TV, mute the sound, select the closed captioning option and have your child “read” the TV show.
- Predict endings of TV shows.
- Summarize a TV show. (Tell what the story was about. What happened? How did it end?)
- Look at TV commercials. Tell the difference between fact and opinion.
